Transource Update: February 2021

It has been a while since we’ve updated this site on the status of the Transource IEC.  Here’s a quick update:

You may recall that the project needs to be approved by both the MD PSC and PA PUC in order for the project to be proceed.  This sets up two different timelines.

In MD, PJM admitted in late 2019 that our proposal to utilize existing transmission towers for the eastern leg  was a feasible solution.  Consequently, Transource submitted a revised “settlement” route that no longer requires large-scale construction of towers along the eastern route.  Most of the parties to the MD case agreed with the settlement, with the notable exception of the MD Office of People’s Council (OPC), which believes that the project provides too little benefit for its cost.  The MD PSC approved the settlement in June of 2020 over the objections of MD OPC.

The PA case is also reaching its completion.  In December 2020, the Administrative Law Judge in charge of hearing the case issued her decision denying the application.   You can read her decision here: https://www.puc.pa.gov/pcdocs/1688185.pdf

Transource has filed exceptions to this decision.  The entire PA PUC will now review the case and issue a decision.  There is no timeline required for that decision.
